Once upon a time, in a small village in Japan, there lived an old and kindly man. He lived alone near a forest. Inspite of this, everyone in the village was his friend. His son had already grown up, gotten married, settled down in a big city far off and even had a son. The old man's young grandson would often come to visit him in the holidays. He loved his grandfather a lot and had become very attached to him. Being the young child that he was, he loved listening to stories and fairytales. Likewise, the old man loved to tell stories as well.
He would often tell his grandson tales of adventure, magic and miracles. He would tell excerpts of his own childhood such as how he became friends with a bakeneko, how he met a tanuki and his son and other strange yet delightful meetings with magical creatures such as ghosts and demons. Each story would end with the young boy ( the old man) becoming friends with the creatures.
Each time that the old man told a story like that, he would remember his childhood. It would bring back happy memories and he would wish- that if even for a day, or even a night- if he could just turn into a little boy again, he would be at peace. As for his grandson, everytime he heard the story, he would refuse to believe his grandfather but a second later, he would wish that he could meet the strange, friendly creatures as well.
One night, while going for a stroll in the forest, the old man and his grandson walked hand in hand, with the old man telling the usual story and the young boy listening intently. However while they proceeded deeper into the forest, they realized that the moonlight was disappearing and being replaced by a warm glowing light. As his curiosity increased, the young boy ran ahead leaving the old man behind. As the old man tried to catch up to him, he realised that his clothes were getting heavier, and he could feel his body shrinking. As he started hearing cheering and yelling, he ran as fast as he could.
What he saw before him was nothing short of a miracle. There he saw a large gathering of all the magical creatures he had met in his childhood. As he stood there in a shock, he heard someone yell "Taro! Taro". It was the nickname that he had been given as a child.
"How'd you know my name? Do you remember me?" asked the old man. "Of course we remember you! You haven't changed a bit! Aren't humans supposed to look very old and wrinkled after so many years?!" said the creatures.
"But I am old!" cried the old man. But then he realised that his own voice had become softer. He then ran to the nearest pond to see his reflection. It was indeed true, he had turned into a young boy! Before he could realise what was going on, he heard his grandson yelling "Grandpa, come quick, come quick! You have to see this!!" As the previously old man, now a young boy rushed to his side, he saw his old friend the bakeneko.
"Baka" as he liked to tease and call the bakeneko, was a very dear friend of his. Baka had always hated the fact that even though his tail was so long, he still couldn't get a new tail and transform into a nekomata.
But that night, was indeed a night of miracles as lifelong dreams became true. As Baka's tail started glowing, a new tail started forming. As everybody looked at the marvellous spetacle, the bakeneko had now transformed into a nekomata!
Everybody was overjoyed. The creatures, in their joyful gathering had finally met their old friend Taro; Taro, who was previously the old man, could experience again, what it was like to be a young boy; Baka, who had now, after so many years turned into a nekomata; and one of the happiest of them all was the grandson, who never in his wildest dreams thought that he could actually meet all those creatures!
That night, they enjoyed a feast worthy of a king. They talked about years gone past and all that had happened. Introductions and conversations, fun and games, their little party lacked in nothing.
However, as daybreak arrived, Taro and his grandson bid farewell to their friends. As they headed back home, Taro again turned into an old man. But that didn't matter anymore. Because after a miracle like that, he didn't need anything else. Taro and his grandson laughed and talked about the night that had passed.
Taro's grandson now tells his grandchildren the same stories he had heard as a child. He still remembers that night of miracles, and wishes that he could experience it again with his own grandchildren.

This is my entry for 's international competiton. Here's their website -->>[link]
Even though I have no chance of even entering the semi finals, my friend encouraged me to try at the very least. And so, it is actually a miracle in itself that I even tried my best. She told me that "if I try, I might fail, but if I don't, I've already failed" And because of her, I will try my best in every competition that I enter.
Your comment made my day! In fact probably my month! I really appreciate the fact that you took the time to read it even though it was so long! And the fact that you liked it as well
